Music has the power to move us, to connect deeply and directly with our hopes, desires and emotions. A quote often attributed to St. Augustine of Hippo says “When we sing, we pray twice”, and the Catholic Church emphasises the importance of using music in services to:
- Give praise and thanks to God
- Encourage participation of the whole congregation
- Join us together in mind and spirit
- Express our feelings and emotions in a deeper way than words alone
- Reinforce the liturgical messages in the service, helping us to remember them
- Reflect on any special intentions for which the service is offered
To facilitate congregational singing, we have two organists who play at most Sunday Masses, and a music group that plays at the 10:30 Mass one Sunday each month and other special occasions. Ages range from 10 to 70+ and abilities from relative beginner to Grade 8+.
We also have a choir of singers who learn the hymns and liturgical songs in order to lead the congregation.
Would you like to be part of the Music Ministry? All are welcome. Just have a word with the organists or any member of the music group and we’ll be happy to help.
